Please, write your thoughts about chapter 9, “About Love.”

  1. I found this chapter very interesting. In the beginning, it mentioned that ‘love’ was never mentioned in school. It didn’t talk about love for other people, just for their Communist Party and things like that. The romantic affection for other people was out of the question. For me that is strange because when I was in high school, it was talked about almost daily and nobody thought anything of it. Everyone talked about it like it was no big deal. In the book it said, “We perk up at the sound of the word ‘love’.” That was not how it was when I was in school. When the word ‘love’ was mentioned we either rolled our eyes about it or just ignore it. I just find it fascinating how different schools and cultures can be.

    This chapter was a great look into Communist teachings. Words that we commonly use in the United States are not even taught in the Soviet Union. The change from the Young Pioneer status to a Communist group at age 14 also shows that children were taught to never question the Communist way. I also thought that it was interesting that the school doors were locked to prevent students from skipping a meeting. This action would never be allowed in the United States.
